The challenge met by the Black Tusk team in this instance was an urban lot with a potential peek-a-boo view over Georgian Bay. The lot is sloped and wooded. It would be designed initially as a weekend getaway for the clients’ two passions – skiing and sailing. A smaller footprint would keep costs under control, and the home would have a higher level of interior finishes.
Black Tusks’ experience led to an approach that reversed the floor plan to move the main living area to the upper floor. The design allowed the slope of the lot to guide window placement to maximize natural light while maintaining privacy. The exterior upper and lower decks would give an outdoor dimension to both levels, and a detached garage would allow for gear storage.
The detailed design solution from Black Tusk is based on clean interior lines, featuring a contemporary use of glass and stone. It is Whistler-inspired, making best use of vertical space. An away room on the upper level doubles as a home office and additional sleeping area. The fireplace is positioned to block poorer views. And a detached garage with connecting breezeway provides weather protection and creates a private back garden area among trees for hotter summer days.
